There are lots of reasons you may not have a degree. After all, it’s expensive, time-consuming, and can be frustrating to work your way through academia. The good news is that you still can find a really great job, even if you don’t have a degree. So, take a look at just these examples of jobs (and even careers) that don’t really require degrees. Even without the degree requirement, you may still find that a high-school diploma or certification might be preferred or required, but those qualifications can often be satisfied in short order via a GED or certification program. Here are just a few examples of jobs you can get without a degree. 

Landscaper 

You probably see landscapers all the time when you’re driving around town, but you may not have considered it a viable job option. It’s a great option if you enjoy yard work, and you’ve got a green thumb. In some states, landscapers are required to be licensed, which typically involves years of experience in the landscaping business, as well as a passing grade on a professional licensure test. As a landscaper, you may also need to be bonded and insured.

Web Developer 

As a prospective web developer, you can take classes to learn the skills you’ll need. You can also receive training and certification from a number of programs. A big part of the process of establishing a presence and credibility as a web developer, though, is by demonstrating your skills. So, your online portfolio, with examples of the work that you’ve done, will be key to getting a job as a web developer. 

Plumber 

There are a few ways that you could learn the job of a plumber. Typically, you’ll become an apprentice, or you may also attend a technical certification program. Depending on the state you’re in, you may also be required to obtain a license by having the required experience and by passing the exam. You may also work under a licensed plumber. 

Patrol Officer

You’re required to graduate from the police academy to become a patrol officer, and the job duties can range from responding to emergencies or incidents, arresting suspects, or enforcing the law. It’s one of those jobs that you may decide to pursue because you can help protect your community and make it a better place for your family. 

Medical Assistant 

There are a whole range of jobs in health and medical-related fields. A medical assistant or medical secretary are just two examples. A medical assistant, in particular, typically has a certificate from a medical assistant program, where they learn to take patient history, schedule appointments, and conduct other basic tasks in a doctor’s office. 

There are a wide range of jobs that you can get even if you don’t have an advanced degree. These are just a few examples, but you’ll really want to focus on areas that are of interest to you. If, for example, you love computers, and you have a knack for programming, a web developer job might be a great direction to pursue. If you love to work outdoors, and you enjoy gardening and digging in the dirt, landscaping may be a great opportunity. And, if you want to work with people or offer assistance in emergency situations, maybe consider becoming a patrol officer. The more you dig into the job possibilities, you’ll likely be pleasantly surprised how many options are open to you without a degree.
